Interesting article about text-to-speech GPS voices and their impact on drivers

I came across this the other day, a really interesting article about the advances in speech technology for GPS navigation instructions and the impact on driver behaviour [read it here]. Basically, the author summarises the state of play and development for text-to-speech technologies and the use of computer generated voices in satnav. He concludes by illustrating how crude the systems still are in terms of getting emotion into the computer generated GPS voices. Contrast this with pre-recorded GPS voices, like our very own VoiceSkins, which manage to convey a huge range of emotions in each character’s satnav voice: Darth is threatening, seductive, menacing; Homer is goofy, defensive, self-important; Snoop is laconic, critical; Yoda is quizzical, authoritative, encouraging; C-3PO is concerned, obsequious.

Why would you want to listen to a voice that fails to keep your interest and that can’t reproduce anything like the emotional range of a real human voice? I’ve always wondered why you need a text-to-speech voice to tell you to ‘turn left into Acacia Avenue’, as:

a) you rarely have the ability to catch a street sign whilst driving, in which case the additional location specific addition is unnecessary;

b)if you need your GPS to guide you then you probably don’t know / don’t care about the name of the road you are about to turn left into – all you need is a simple instruction like, ‘take the next left’.

Text-to-speech will have to be able to reproduce a far richer emotional range than currently as well as provide the option of real celebrity GPS voices like Homer, Darth Vader, Snoop Dogg, Yoda and others before it will be a real contender IMHO!

VoiceSkins launches original German Darth Vader & Yoda GPS voices on TomTom.com

For all German Star Wars fans out there who wish they could hear the original German GPS voices of Darth Vader and Yoda, today is a special day! TomTom have just announced the launch of the German Vader and Yoda satnav voices, and they sound amazing!

Working in a foreign language presented many challenges for the VoiceSkins team but the voices turned out great. Still, recording  the original talent that did the Star Wars films’ overdubs in German meant that the VoiceSkins team had the best raw material to work with. You can hear them here.  And for those of you who speak German, here’s a bit about Darth Vader from the TomTom site:

‘VaderLord Vader befiehlt Ihnen, den Pfad zur dunklen Seite einzuschlagen. Werden Sie es schaffen, sich ihm auf dem Weg zu Ihrer Bestimmung zu widersetzen? Obi-Wan war Ihnen ein guter Lehrmeister, aber jetzt müssen Sie sich für eine Seite entscheiden. An die Lichtschwerter!’

VoiceSkins launches official STAR WARS™ Yoda GPS satnav voice

Take you to your destination, Yoda will

~ Jedi Master is latest official Star Wars voice, only on TomTom ~

Amsterdam, 08 July 2010 – The Force is strong with TomTom drivers – and it’s about to get stronger. As of today, in association with LucasFilm™ and VoiceSkins.com, TomTom customers can be guided by the greatest Jedi Master of them all: Yoda.

Joining Darth Vader and C-3PO, Yoda is the latest official Star Wars voice to launch exclusively for TomTom devices. Han Solo will complete the line-up of fan favourites in August.

“With incredible Jedi powers, Yoda is the ideal voice to guide Star Wars fans on their journeys,” says Alain Pakiry, Senior Vice President for Marketing at TomTom. “Yoda is one of voices most frequently requested by the TomTom community. So we’re thrilled to launch the official Yoda voice, available only on TomTom devices.”

“The TomTom brand is synonymous with high quality navigation. Star Wars fans are sure to be delighted when they hear just how great these voices sound on their TomTom navigation devices,” says Casey Collins, sr. director of international licensing and marketing at Lucas Licensing.

A powerful Jedi warrior Yoda may be. But his quirky diction and mischievous personality also make him one of the most charming characters in the Star Wars universe – and one who adds a whole galaxy of fun to TomTom GPS voice commands. Incorporating dialogue inspired by the original Star Wars films, Yoda’s navigation instructions include “After 700 hundred meters hmm, keep to the right then take a sharp left. Control, control, if a Jedi you wish to be.”

The Yoda voice also comes with ghostly encouragement from Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi taken from the original films and embedded into the navigation commentary. John Williams’ touching ‘Yoda’s Theme’ music is also interwoven with certain commands, providing a richness and cinematic experience rarely heard on navigation systems.

In addition to Yoda’s voice, TomTom has launched a range of official Yoda wallpapers and alert sounds voiced by the Jedi Master. TomTom customers can download these items for free to ensure their TomTom device is enlisted in the service of the Jedi.

All official Star Wars voices for TomTom devices are available in English, while Yoda and Darth Vader are also now available in German. Further languages will be available throughout the summer.
